One Useful Question

WHEN TO USE IT

When a conversation is stuck, a relationship is strained, and you do not know what to say next.

WHAT TRICKSTER DOES

Trickster fills the silence with defense, blame, or rehearsal. It says you have to win, or prove, or protect. It turns a hard conversation into a courtroom.

WHAT BUFFALO REMEMBERS

You do not have to win. You have to find one useful question — one that opens instead of closes. Repair is not about being right. It is about staying in relationship.

THE PRACTICE
  1. Pause in the hard moment.
  2. Ask yourself: "What is one question that would help me understand, not prove?"
  3. Try: "What do you need right now?" Or: "Can you tell me more?"
  4. Ask it. Then listen.
  5. You do not have to agree. You just have to stay.
TRY THIS TODAY

The next time a conversation tightens, do not make a statement. Ask one question. Make it a real one — one you do not already know the answer to.

IF THIS DIDN'T HELP

Some relationships are not safe to stay in. If the other person is harming you, repair is not the practice. Boundaries are. Get support to figure out what is safe.

RECEIVE FIELD NOTES

Use the Whole Buffalo is still taking shape as a book, but the practices are already here for ordinary hard weather. If this language is useful to you, you can join a small early community and receive occasional field notes: new practices, sample material, and first word when the book's ready. No pressure. No performance. Just something steady to return to when the mind starts making the weather worse.

Receive occasional Field Notes, free practices, book updates, and news from the Four Friends practice companion.

Occasional notes only. You can leave whenever you need to.
